Robert Hahn
WHAT ABOUT BOB?
Bob Hahn is not your ordinary writer and urban strategist. He is a memoirist, urban development expert, and community well-being advocate with over 40 years of experience in the field.
Born in Washington DC to an Army Colonel and his Parisian wife, Bob's life has been an exciting journey filled with adventures in different countries and cultures. From his early days in Paris, where he attended an international school at the age of five, to his nomadic life as an "army brat" attending over 10 schools, Bob has had a taste of what it feels like to live in a multicultural community, and he liked it.
As an undergraduate at Berkeley, Bob was drawn to the social sciences and worked with autistic children, as a tutor with inner-city youth in West Oakland, and as a counselor at Hidden Villa, the first multi-racial summer camp of its kind in the United States. Bob's fascination with the impact of the built environment on human behavior led him to earn a professional master's degree in urban planning and behavioral design at The Ohio State University.
Bob's research findings on the behavioral evaluation of a juvenile treatment facility were published when he was 24 and became widely disseminated throughout the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) community.
In the mid-1980s, Bob formed an environmental design practice in Central Florida with his wife, a professional designer. As community developers, their mission has been to develop holistic communities that meet the varying needs of their residents.
In the early years, Bob's firm focused on finding solutions to meet the growing affordable housing crisis in Central Florida. Bob authored numerous publications on the use of creative regulatory reform and was invited to speak nationally as an expert on the issue. Bob has served on numerous committees and task forces, crafting policy changes aimed at making a difference in the growing crisis.
Bob's life has been full of challenges and insights, and he shares them in his memoirs. In his courses, Bob focuses on building and developing healthy and resilient communities, sharing his 40+ years of research, case studies, an experience providing holistic solutions that support mental, emotional, and spiritual health at the community level.
In the 1990s, Bob extended the reach of his practice nationwide, applying his background and talents in psychology and environmental design to the field of criminal justice, crime, and drug prevention. He provided over 20,000 hours of technical assistance, guiding under-resourced urban and rural communities and American Indian tribes impacted by crime and drug activity.
From 2013 to 2016, Bob taught graduate courses at Rollins College in the field of civic design, equipping his students with tools to deliver holistic solutions for the creation of healthy and resilient communities. He has also served on public and non-profit boards, including organizations that serve the intellectually disabled. For the last 10 years, his focus has been as a strategic development partner/investor in senior housing.
In June 2021, Bob was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, which made him turn inward for healing. He began a daily practice of writing short personal memoirs. He found this practice comforting, providing him with a newfound sense of calm and direction. Bob brings this same sense of peace and hope to his audience of readers as they manage the anxiety and uncertainty of their illness.
Bob currently resides in Winter Park, Florida, with his wife Inevett. They have two grown children pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams.
